Margarida Vaz Neto, better known as Maggie, is a Portuguese soprano based in London, England. She is in love with contemporary and modern music, but still saves a special place in her heart for Romantic opera. She performs a wide range of repertoire, both as a soloist and as a member of the Philharmonia Chorus. Maggie’s regular engagements also include three choral scholarships, one of them being in St Paul’s Church, in Knightsbridge; and giving private singing lessons.
With the Philharmonia Chorus, she has recently performed in the Live Music Projection of the film Lord of the Rings - Return of the King, by Howard Shore, in the Royal Albert Hall; and in the Choral Symphony Bells, by Sergei Rachmaninoff, in the Royal Festival Hall. Maggie regularly collaborates with composers. Recently, she has co-founded the new music focused New Contemporalis Ensemble with the composer Margarida Gonçalves. This ensemble is focused on collaborating with other musicians and artists in search of creating concerts that aim to be approachable experiences of new music for first-time audiences, without compromising on the quality of the music.
In opera, she has recently created the roles of Kay in Will Harmer’s Show Home, Dion in Toby Anderson’s Satyrs and Young Ethel in Dame Ethel Smyth, a music theatre piece by Chloe Knibbs about the late composer. She has also starred the UK premier of Tenderness, a mono-opera by Vitaliy Hubarenko, with the Lichtar Orchestra. Maggie has performed in the contemporary opera festival Tête-à-Tête in 2023 and will be coming back in September 2024 to create the role of Brízida in Margarida Gonçalves’s The Acts of Brízida Vaz.
